On two Thursday mornings in September, IFMA Atlanta Community Services Committee presented the third and fourth sessions of the five-part Certificate of Nonprofit Facility Management through Nonprofit University at Georgia Center for Nonprofits. Representatives from nonprofit organizations are learning to master the essentials of renovating and maintaining their facilities with minimum impact on their operating programs.
The September 11 session on Renovations and Construction focused on understanding the process of construction projects and having the proper assistance to ensure that renovation and building projects are more efficient and less frustrating. From IFMA Board Members Ken Bryson and Ken Stephenson, both of the Projects and Construction Management Services Office at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, participants learned how to identify the work to be done and to engage and manage the appropriate trades and professionals. Soliciting, analyzing, and negotiating proposals was covered, as well as managing a project to completion.
On September 25, Shane Totten and Cody David from Southface gave the presentation on Sustainable Facility Practices. Participants gained a deeper understanding of sustainability and why sustainable practices are advantageous to their facilities. The program covered how to determine sustainable projects that will benefit nonprofit facilities and how to access funding for sustainable projects through community initiatives.
The final session on October 9 will address Facility Safety and Security. Presenters are Barbara Miller, Facilities Manager for AkzoNobel Coatings; Steve Hamlin, Georgia Account Manager for United Security Alliance; and Scott Mullis, Director of Training at EPIC Response.
