Construction Management Fundraiser Gala
This past Thursday evening, September 25, 2014, the SPSU Construction Management Department hosted this year’s Annual Construction Management Gala and Fundraiser at the Cobb Energy Center. Once again, the evening proved to be a huge success.
Keynote speaker, Dan Papp-President of KSU, spoke to a full house. All were very happy to hear of his commitment to the Construction Management program along with his plans for the future.
There were no shortage of wonderful silent auction items along with a delicious meal and much networking and general “catching up”. CIAB Scholarship were awarded to the four deserving students:

Construction Management Fall Scholarship Awards
It is our favorite time of year again as the Construction Management Department proudly announces the 2014 Scholarship Winners. We have many deserving students and are honored to see so many receive assistance!
All scholarships will be used by the winners to fund spring 2015 tuition and fees. Awards will be presented on October 21, 2014 at the Hilton Marietta Conference Center.

IFMA World Workplace Attended by SPSU
Dr. Khalid Siddiqi, Construction Management Department Chair, Professor Brandi Williams and students Marie Kitchen and Quindell Myrick, IFMA Student Chapter President spent three information packed days in New Orleans this September attending the IFMA World Workplace Facility Conference and Expo.
IFMA World Workplace provided many opportunities to experience the world of facility management and hear how professionals are embracing sustainability in their day-to-day operations. The Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability presentation track is one of the IFMA 11 Core Competencies, and deals with the sustainable management of built and natural environments. Real life challenges in sustainability from financial constraints to employee- employer buy-in were discussed in case study format and/or panel discussion format so that a wide range of opinions were represented.
Facility Management is an area that has begun to transform offices, universities, and all structures, not only into more sustainable buildings but also, to encourage inhabitants to become more actively involved with sustainability.
One of the most interesting presentations was led by Marie Puybaraud with Johnson Controls, entitled “8.01 Driving Behavioral Change in Environmental Sustainability”. Ms. Puybaraud discussed their global research results on various metrics of behaviors and attitudes towards sustainability since any change begins with understanding attitudes, related behaviors and perceptions.
The following are a few highlights from the global report.
- 34% of respondents are Campaigners, 27% are Housekeepers, 21% are Libertarians and
18% are Pragmatists
- 67% of respondents would like to work in an organization where employees take the lead
in initiating sustainable practices
- 33% of respondents would consider a company’s environmental record when applying for
jobs
- 71% of respondents agree that companies should prioritize investment in lowering the
environmental impact of working practices
- 86% of respondents agree that sustainability needs to be about long-term investment
- Western countries have some of the best – and worst – examples of sustainable cultures
- Executives across the globe are reluctant to let sustainability impact financial goals,
work patterns or practices
- Support for sustainability increases with age
World Workplace Career Fair
There were six companies present at the WWP conference, and among them was the US Postal System. Representatives suggested that Atlanta is a main hub but they also have a program in Washington, DC designed to train FM’s how to run a USPS facility.
Construction Management Gets A Facelift
After much packing, moving, and scurrying about, our Construction Management Department is well on its way to get a fresh coat of paint and a stylish update. It is long awaited and we are all looking forward to the new look!
