I’ve had the privilege to work in many aspects of the building industry: working as construction laborer, framer, residential property manager, Assistant Director of Facilities for a local university, Building Operation Specialist for a university, designer, etc. While attending Georgia Tech I am interested in developing and implementing better processes to utilize resources through technology and operations for facilities.
What is the major reason you want to be a Facility Management professional?
I have looked at this question many times and I learn more about myself each time. There are many small incidences that led me to Facility Management. I have always had a passion for ADA and ensuring that places meet people’s needs. While growing up I lived down the street from a person not much older than myself that had Muscular Dystrophy. I spent a lot of time at their home and began to see how hard it was for them to get through their home. I started analyzing space in regards to how it filled needs. This led me to understand space layout and design but also how process affects function. I’ve had the opportunity to work in both facilities and construction through parts of my career, but it was not until I was asked to evaluate a university campus that I began to understand what Facility Management was about. I get a sense of accomplishment from knowing the work I do supports the companies I work for.
What benefits do you find in attending Georgia Tech?
I was led to Georgia Tech because Tech had the areas of study that I wanted; and I wanted to attend a university that would stretch me and challenge me to be better. While attending Georgia Tech my greatest takeaways have been coming together with other professionals and learning from each other. There have been numerous times when I have learned about a new subject matter and receive insights from others. The class structure at Georgia Tech allows me to work full time while attending classes and helps me provide for my family and further my career.
