Fall
always seems to bring many new and exciting
happenings - schools starting back up (OK, maybe
not so exciting?), sports, festivals, arts and
craft events, trade shows and conventions - and
our own Atlanta chapter is in the homestretch of
getting ready for the really big show in
Philadelphia, IFMA World Workplace 2013.
This
year the excitement here is over the top, and for
the best of reasons: the Atlanta
Chapter of IFMA has captured the brass ring -
Large Chapter of the Year! On
Friday, October 4, our own Annette Gorelick will
represent the chapter in accepting this
prestigious award, crowning the efforts of the
many chapter leaders and members who spent many
hours putting together the award submission under
Annette's energetic leadership as 2012-13 Chapter
President. The submission wouldn't have been
possible without the very real accomplishments
that the Chapter achieved, of course, and credit
goes to every chapter member who contributed time,
resources, and encouragement during the entire
year to establish a nationally outstanding track
record in every one of our fields of endeavor -
professional development, communications,
community service, event organization, program
delivery - just to name a few. The skills and
competencies that mark both the professional
facility managers and the business professionals
who support this chapter have proven over and over
to result in a record of excellence that deserves
to be celebrated; I'm honored to be able to offer
my heartfelt congratulations from the chapter
president's "bully pulpit"
today.
Sincerely,
Ken

October 16th
- Active Shooter in the
Workplace |
NOTE:
This is a breakfast
meeting
This
briefing is designed to give the attendee's an
understanding of the Human factors that are
present "before" and during an act of workplace
violence. We will focus on the
pre-incident indicators that can reveal the
intentions of someone who intends to commit an act
of violence or that an active shooter is present
prior to the event and immediate response
practices that can lower the loss of
life.
Prevention
is our goal, It is not realistic to expect
that you can control the trigger mechanism
that causes a person to commit an act of extreme
violence. Historically in the US we have
learned that there is indeed some form of mental
break down in the lives of the shooters.
With
this reality in mind, there are certain
factors and visual cues that each attacker or
attackers will inadvertently disclose that will
reveal what their intentions are prior to the
event. Knowing what to look for will enable
you to develop strategies designed to intercept
the attacker before he or she has an opportunity
to carry out the attack.

understanding of the types of work place
violence and the
importance of the
interaction between all levels of a facility's
personnel.
- Identify
the components of an effective threat asessment
team and emergency response planning by using
the resources at hand.
- Understand
the principles of
counter-wurveillance.

(IACET) has awarded the Atlanta Chapter of the
International Facility Management Association

only organizations approved to offer IACET
Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The
accreditation period extends for five years, and
includes all programs offered or created during

Stephenson added, "Our new partnership with IACET
is a demonstration of our commitment to lifelong
learning and high standards for all of our
programs, and we are very pleased to join such a
prestigious organization as well as an elite group
of organizations that offer excellent continuing
education and training programs. We could not have
gotten to this point without the hard work of many
members - most notably, Harriet
Whelihan."

Sustainability How
to Guide
Sustainability
in the Food Service
Environment
A
sustainable food service environment seeks to
balance social, economic and environmental factors
while providing group sustenance. The
"Sustainability in the Food Service Environment"
guide instructs food service managers and facility
managers in how to introduce and advance
sustainable practices. It addresses local
purchasing, waste management, energy conservation,
green building design and other key sustainability
topics. The guide provides practical directions on
how to implement these measures and includes a
list of resources for additional information.

How
to Avoid Career Obsolescence
IFMA
Chicago presentation by Joe
Carroll
Program
Overview
Rapid
advances in technology and science are causing
some industries to decline while others flourish.
These factors when combined with the retiring baby
boomers will accelerate major skill gaps over the
next five to ten years, ushering in a new era of
career obsolescence. The skills gap is further
compounded when people get too comfortable in
their jobs and develop a false sense of job
security. This presentation will help managers
meet the future with confidence, stay ahead of the
game and acquire concrete techniques to keep their
careers on track.

The
fall semester is well underway at Georgia Tech and
we have a group of new FM students eager to learn
more about managing the built environment. We also
have students graduating each semester, spring and
fall, so this December we will have several
students looking for full-time positions in FM. If
you have openings and want to receive resume's,
please contact Brenda Morris at [email protected] or
404-385-7479.
This
summer Professor Roper hosted a group of 24 South
Korean students from Kyung Hee University in an
"FM Intensive Program at Georgia Tech." This trip
was an exciting opportunity for these
undergraduate students to learn more about FM in
the U.S. and Atlanta. Thanks to the IFMA members
who provided guest lectures or hosted tours of
their facilities. The students were extremely
gracious and appreciative of everyone's
contribution to make the program a success. Dr.
Jun Ha Kim, former GT student and IFMA Atlanta
Chapter Scholarship winner, agreed that the
program was a huge success and plans are already
underway to obtain funding in Korea for another
trip in 2014.

Career
Mentoring Program
Update
By
Joe Carroll, Chair, Career Services
Committee
The
IFMA-Atlanta chapter Career Mentoring Program has
been operational for nearly two years. We have had
10 Mentees and 7 Mentors. This program enables one
person (the Mentor) to facilitate the development
of another person (the Mentee) by sharing skills,
expertise, perspectives, and guidance in this
one-on-one relationship program. This program can
have a powerful and positive impact on chapter
members in many ways. According to one survey,
seventy-five percent of executives stated that
mentoring played a key role in their careers.
Giving your time and talent in helping fellow
members move along in their professional
development is a worthy endeavor. Winston
Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we
get, we make a life by what we give." Shown below
is an outline of the program.
What
is a Mentor?
A
mentor is an experienced facilities management
professional who can provide professional advice
and guidance to students and less experienced
facilities management professionals to help them
attain professional certifications and advance
their professional growth. Mentors must be a
chapter member, have at least 5 years experience
as a facilities management professional, and be
willing to commit his or her time and talent to
help the mentee.
There
are several benefits to being a
Mentor:
- Satisfaction
of mentoring another FM professional seeking
advice, career guidance, credentialing status
and enhancing their professional and career
potential.
- Re-energizes
the mentor's career.
- Raising
the distinction of the designation into the
Atlanta Business Market.
- Recognition
from the Atlanta Chapter as a Chapter
Mentor.
- Receive
10 CFM maintenance points per
year.
If
you would like to be a Mentor, please call Joe
Carroll at 404-582-8859 or [email protected]
What
is a Mentee?
A
Mentee is a facilities management professional
(practicing or student) seeking advice and
guidance from an experienced facilities management
professional in order to advance his or her
professional growth and/or to attain
certification(s). Mentees must be a chapter
member.
There
are several benefits to being a
Mentee:
A.
Will improve your problem solving, listening
skills, communications, interpersonal
relationships, technical abilities and
leadership skills.
B.
Meet colleagues with varied experiences, skills
and contacts.
C.
Network with others in your
field.
D.
A mentor will help you in areas concerning your
professional growth.
E.
A mentor will help you to achieve
certification.
F.
Meet colleagues with varied experiences, skills
and contacts.
How
Does The Program Work?
- Joe
Carroll, the Chair of the Career Services
Committee serves as the Mentoring Program
Manager (MPM).
- The
MPM will receive requests for mentors and
mentees and will seek to make appropriate
matches.
- Prospective
mentors and mentees must submit a registration
form to the MPM.
- The
MPM will monitor the progress of the program on
an on-going basis and will provide periodic
reports to the Chair of the Professional
Development Committee.
- The
MPM will seek ways to promote the program
throughout the
chapter.
This
program will only be as good as the people who
support it. I would encourage you to get involved
and heed the words of John Crosby who once said:
"Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen,
and a push in the right direction." To get
involved, please Joe Carroll. His contact
information is shown below.
